Himachal Brothers Defend Fraternal Polyandry as Cultural Tradition

Himachal Pradesh, August 2025 — Two brothers from the Sirmaur district have drawn public attention after jointly marrying the same woman, an act they say is part of a time-honored cultural tradition practiced by their community.

Pradeep and Kapil Negi, residents of Thindo village in Shillai, recently tied the knot with Sunita Chauhan from Kunhat village in accordance with the ‘Jodidar Pratha’, a form of fraternal polyandry observed among the Hatti community in the Trans-Giri region. This custom, also referred to locally as ‘Jodidara,’ has long been followed in select areas of Himachal Pradesh and parts of neighboring Uttarakhand.

“This is our tradition, and we are not ashamed of it,” said elder brother Pradeep in a Facebook video. “We are unaffected by social media criticism. The practice is deeply rooted in our culture, just as it is in Jaunsar-Bawar of Uttarakhand.”

Kapil, the younger of the two, emphasized that the union was fully consensual and supported by their families and community.

“Our wife, our family, and both of us agreed to it. This was not forced. We have our community’s blessing,” he said.

The practice of fraternal polyandry, though rare and often misunderstood, has deep cultural and economic roots in certain Himalayan regions. Historically, such marriages helped prevent the fragmentation of family landholdings—crucial for sustaining agrarian life in mountainous terrain. In these arrangements, the eldest brother is traditionally regarded as the legal guardian of any children born from the union.

The wedding ceremony, held over three days starting July 12 in Shillai, featured vibrant folk performances, traditional music, and community-wide celebrations.

Addressing the public discourse, Pradeep urged others to respect their way of life.

“We want to stay united and keep love among us. We are happy, and we don’t want unnecessary judgment from outsiders.”

The couple’s decision has sparked conversations across social platforms, shedding light on lesser-known traditions still observed in isolated communities of North India. While the practice remains uncommon, families like the Negis stand by it as a meaningful expression of unity and cultural continuity.
